South Africa

Tours and Transfers

Johannesburg is most people's entry point to South Africa, and as it is the centre of the economic  and business hub, it is not considered a tourist destination.  Most tourists use it as an overnight stop before going on to the better-known spots.  They discover too late that the city has much to offer tourists - read on.

Graham Carrick, a partner in Graton Guest House, offers  an additional service to those guests staying at Graton - or for those who may be staying elsewhere but would like to explore the country. He has been a qualified tour guide since 2005 and his knowledge of local matters, both current and historical, is extensive and informative.  He will personally arrange and lead any tour that you may require. He offers a large variety of half, full day and extended tours.  He can also assist with other local travel arrangements on your behalf.

Some examples of tours include:

  • Johannesburg (affectionately known as Jozi)  and Soweto, including Mandela House Museum and the Hector Peterson Memorial
  • Visits to the Apartheid Museum and the Origins Centre, reflecting the San culture and rock art, both an absolute must
  • Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, the Joburg Zoo & Zoo Lake
  • Soweto - Constitution Hill, with the new Court, the Fort and old prison buildings
  • Rhino and Lion Park
  • Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden famous for its pair of black eagles
  • The Cradle of Humankind - a World Heritage Site, including Maropeng and the Sterkfontein caves
  • Tshwane / Pretoria - the "purple" city of Jacaranda trees, its beautiful buildingsand the Voortrekker Monument

For those wishing to travel further afield Graham will organise a tailor-made trip to suit your specific requirements, no matter how small or how different.

  • A full-day trip to Pilanesberg Game Reserve  with a quick look at Sun City - or an overnight stay.
  • A minimum 3-day trip to Kruger National Park and spectacular Blyde River Canyon
  • Kwazulu-Natal -  battlefields and mountains
  • Durban - beaches, and where east meets west in a rainbow of cultures
  • Cape Town, the Garden Route, Eastern Cape, Swaziland, Kimberley and many other places.

Graton is also a convenient place to start exploring Greater Johannesburg and you'll find plenty to do which is why the tourism department's slogan is "Spend another day in Joburg" - from casinos like Montecasino, theatres such as the world-famous Market Theatre, restaurants aplenty - to museums and art galleries like the Johannesburg Art Gallery, WAM (Wits Art Museum)  and the Jan Smuts Art Route, not forgetting Rosebank's African Craft Market and the Sunday Rooftop Market at Norwood Mall.

Transfers to and from OR Tambo International and Lanseria Airports to Graton or other guest houses can also be arranged.
